On Becoming a Foster Parent – June

On Becoming a Foster Parent

May might have been the eye of the storm, eerily calm and easy. But, June came with it’s whirlwinds and challenges of it’s own. The courts approved moving forward with adopting my daughter at the same time they approved visitations with bio mom in prison. It made no sense, and I couldn’t find anything more appropriate for the situation than an insult poem. I used the anaphora “Health and Welfare does the job” to emphasize the irony of the situation.

Foster Parent June

June

Health and Welfare does the job

Taking my baby to prison

Strapping her in, arched back, screaming

Health and Welfare does the job

Fetal position, nightmares, suspicious of big people

Shredding her safety net week after week

Health and Welfare does the job

They know what’s best for her
